Under the Trump administration, a series of deaths have been linked to intensified immigration enforcement operations in the United States, with at least six confirmed fatalities. Among the latest victims was Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, who was shot by a Border Patrol officer in Minneapolis while holding his phone, despite official claims that he was armed and threatening. Governor Tim Walz condemned the federal narrative accompanying Pretti's death.
In Minneapolis alone, Pretti's death marked the second fatal incident in January, following the shooting of Renee Good, who also lost her life during an encounter with ICE officers. Eyewitness footage suggested Good posed no real threat when she was fired upon. The Justice Department's insufficient transparency surrounding these cases has led to increasing calls for accountability.
Furthermore, the list of fatalities includes Silverio Villegas González in Chicago, who was shot during a traffic stop, as well as Jaime Alanis, a farmworker who died after falling during an ICE raid in California. Other tragic occurrences involved individuals being struck by vehicles while fleeing from immigration enforcement, such as Roberto Carlos Montoya Valdez in California, and Josué Castro Rivera in Virginia.
These incidents have ignited public outrage and led to protests against immigration raids in multiple states. State and local officials have taken legal action to halt these operations, emphasizing the urgent need for reform within immigration enforcement practices.
