Former Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith is set to testify publicly next week regarding his investigations into former President Donald Trump that have resulted in two significant indictments. This public appearance is scheduled for January 22 and was confirmed by Rep. Jim Jordan, the Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. Smith had previously testified behind closed doors, and a released transcript indicated that he asserted the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot would not have occurred without Trump's influence.

Smith's investigations include Trump's alleged mishandling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results after his loss to Democrat Joe Biden. Notably, the indictments stemming from these investigations were dropped after Trump’s presidential election victory in November 2024 due to Justice Department policies regarding indicting sitting presidents.

In anticipation of the upcoming public hearing, one of Smith's attorneys, Lanny Breuer, reaffirmed that Smith is ready to address inquiries regarding Trump’s alleged unlawful actions. Meanwhile, Trump continues to assert that the Justice Department has been utilized as a political weapon against him in his pursuit to reclaim the presidency.
