Cinemas in South Africa have announced that they will not screen the documentary about US First Lady Melania Trump, titled 'Melania', which is set for global release this Friday.

The decision not to distribute the documentary was made by Filmfinity, as confirmed by the company’s head of sales and marketing. However, they have not disclosed specific reasons for this decision.

Notably, the film is absent from the promotional materials of South Africa's major cinema chains. An independent cinema in Cape Town reported being instructed by Filmfinity not to list the film.

The strained relations between the US and South Africa are cited as influencing this decision. Over the past year, diplomatic ties have worsened, characterized by public disagreements about issues including race and immigration policies.

Amazon has reportedly invested $35 million to promote the documentary, which follows Melania Trump in the days leading up to her husband Donald Trump's second inauguration.

Despite the significant financial backing, none of South Africa's prominent cinema chains, such as Ster Kinekor and Nu Metro, have listed the film among their upcoming screenings.

The distributor’s statement hinted at broader geopolitical factors but refrained from detailing specific events prompting this decision. Efforts by BBC to seek clarification from Filmfinity have not yielded results.

This situation underscores the complexities of film distribution wherein political climates can impact the availability of films within specific regions.
