Iranian security forces have violently arrested Nobel Peace Prize winner and women's rights activist Narges Mohammadi, her foundation has said.
The Narges Foundation stated that her brother confirmed Ms. Mohammadi was detained in the eastern city of Mashhad, alongside other activists. They have called for the immediate release of the 53-year-old and the activists detained across the country, with no comments yet from the Iranian government.
Ms. Mohammadi received the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts against female oppression in Iran and for promoting human rights.
In December 2024, she was temporarily released from jail on medical grounds, after spending time in Tehran's notorious Evin prison since 2021. However, she was expected to return to prison soon, where she was serving multiple sentences.
Her recent arrest reportedly took place as she attended a memorial ceremony for Khosrow Alikordi, a lawyer found dead in his office last week. The group Iran Human Rights has demanded an independent investigation into the circumstances of his death, labeling them as suspicious.
Multiple other activists were detained during the memorial, where attendees reportedly shouted anti-government slogans.
Taghi Rahmani, Ms. Mohammadi's husband, disclosed that she was arrested violently and criticized the government's actions as repressive and a retaliatory measure against dissent.
Ms. Mohammadi has been a vocal critic of the Iranian authorities, expressing in a recent Time magazine article her fears over intensified repression following a ceasefire with Israel.
Throughout her life, Mohammadi has faced significant persecution for her activism, having been arrested 13 times with sentences totaling over 36 years in prison and 154 lashes, as per her foundation.
