In brief

As Bashar al-Assad's regime crumbles, thousands of Syrians are pouring back into their homeland from Lebanon, eager to rebuild amidst the celebrations marking the end of decades of oppression and fear.

After five decades of oppressive rule under Bashar al-Assad, the sudden collapse of his government has ignited jubilation among Syrians, leading to a massive influx of refugees returning from Lebanon. With the former president now reportedly in exile in Moscow, citizens in major cities like Damascus and Aleppo have torn down statues and celebrated the demise of a regime responsible for unimaginable suffering during the brutal civil war that started in 2011. The war, which stemmed from the government's violent crackdown on pro-democracy protests, has claimed the lives of approximately 618,000 individuals, displacing over half of the population, around 12 million people. As rebel forces liberated long-abandoned prisons, families were reunited with loved ones liberated from years of captivity, although many still faced the heartbreaking reality of missing relatives. While joyful reunions marked the moment, there was an undercurrent of sorrow as those still searching for lost family members turned to prison records and hospital morgues for answers. Nonetheless, the end of Assad’s regime has offered a glimmer of hope as families quickly moved back into Syria, eager to commence the daunting task of healing and rebuilding a nation scarred by conflict and tragedy. Celebrations erupted across various cities, marking a critical and transformative chapter in Syria's tumultuous history.
