In brief

The Trump administration has announced plans to import substantial quantities of eggs from Turkey and South Korea to address escalating egg prices in the US, which have surged over 65% in the past year. This initiative follows a $1 billion effort aimed at combating a severe bird flu epidemic that has led to the culling of millions of chickens.

Article Text: In a significant move to mitigate escalating egg prices in the United States, the Trump administration is set to import hundreds of millions of eggs from Turkey and South Korea. This initiative aims to provide immediate relief to American consumers facing unprecedented prices, which have risen more than 65% in the past year. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins confirmed the discussions with these countries during a recent press briefing at the White House. This decision comes on the heels of a $1 billion plan unveiled by the administration to tackle the ongoing bird flu crisis that has decimated poultry populations, forcing farmers to cull tens of millions of chickens. Despite efforts to stabilize prices, projections suggest that egg costs may further increase by 41% by 2025.Rollins remarked that securing adequate supplies remains a priority, while also hinting at potential negotiations with other unnamed nations to bolster egg imports. "Once our chicken populations are restored, we aim to return to utilizing our own egg-laying resources," she indicated, expressing hope for a recovery in the egg market within months.Reports surfaced that Polish and Lithuanian poultry associations have also been contacted by US embassies regarding possible egg exports. Katarzyna Gawronska, director of the National Chamber of Poultry and Feed Producers in Poland, noted that inquiries from the American embassy have raised interest in supplying eggs to the US.In pursuit of a long-term solution, the USDA has initiated a multifaceted $1 billion plan, allocating funds for biosecurity measures, vaccine research, and financial relief for impacted farmers. Specifically, $500 million has been set aside for biosecurity initiatives, $100 million for vaccine development, and $400 million for aiding affected agricultural workers. The administration has pledged to provide commercial egg farms with free consulting and pays up to 75% of expenses associated with addressing vulnerabilities that facilitate the spread of bird flu. Rollins stated, "Our plan includes audits nationwide to help egg-laying companies reinforce their facilities against avian flu," adding that early efforts have shown promising reductions in bird flu incidents. This outbreak, ongoing since 2022, has devastated the poultry industry, leading to the death of over 156 million birds. Egg price inflation became a topic of interest during Trump's recent campaign, directly linking rising costs to the Biden administration. "Joe Biden especially allowed egg prices to spiral out of control, and we're committed to reversing this trend," Trump declared during his address to Congress earlier this month. While the Biden administration's measures last year aimed at controlling the outbreak involved the culling of millions of birds, rising prices persisted leading into Trump’s second term.
