In brief
Indiana Congressman Jim Baird and his wife are recovering in the hospital after a significant car accident. President Trump expressed optimism about their recovery during a speech to House Republicans. This incident comes amid a period of mourning for the Republican Party following the recent deaths of other prominent members.
President Donald Trump reported on Tuesday that Indiana U.S. Rep. Jim Baird, a Republican, and his wife are recovering in the hospital following a car accident.
“They’re going to be okay, but they had a pretty bad accident, and we’re praying that they get out of that hospital very quickly,” Trump said during a session with House GOP members at the Kennedy Center. “He’s going to be fine. She’s going to be fine.”
Baird, who has represented west central Indiana since being elected to Congress in 2019, is currently 80 years old.
As of now, a spokesperson for Baird’s congressional office has not responded to inquiries for more details about the accident.
This news of the accident arrives during a somber time for Republicans in Washington D.C., who are mourning the death of Republican Doug LaMalfa, a seven-term U.S. representative from California. His passing, along with the resignation of Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, has narrowed the Republican party's control in the House to 218 seats against the Democrats’ 213.
It’s worth noting that in 2022, Indiana U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski, also a Republican, lost her life in a tragic head-on vehicle collision within her northern Indiana district, an incident that claimed the lives of two of her staffers and the other vehicle’s driver.
