In brief
The Vatican announced Pope Francis will miss scheduled events this weekend due to a respiratory tract infection, as he remains under medical care in Rome.
Pope Francis will not be attending anticipated events this weekend, as reported by the Vatican on Tuesday. The cancellation is due to ongoing health challenges faced by the pontiff, who is presently hospitalized at Policlinico A. Gemelli in Rome with what doctors have characterized as a “complex clinical picture.”Admitted on Friday, the Pope underwent a series of tests and adjustments to his medication protocol. The latest update from the Vatican indicated that while his condition remained stable without a fever, he is suffering from a “polymicrobial respiratory tract infection.” This diagnosis involves a combination of viruses or bacteria impacting his respiratory system. As a result, Pope Francis canceled his attendance at a scheduled event for deacons set for Saturday and delegated a prelate to lead a Mass in his absence on Sunday. Just the previous week, the pontiff missed another event designed for artists at the Vatican. This marks the fourth occasion on which Pope Francis has been hospitalized at Gemelli since he began his papacy. Notably, he underwent colon surgery there in 2021. His hospitalization relating to a respiratory infection occurred in 2023, leading to a three-day stay, followed by abdominal surgery for a hernia a few months later. In February, the Pope had also undergone tests at the Gemelli facility after experiencing flu-like symptoms. In his youth, Pope Francis had a significant surgical procedure, resulting in the removal of the upper lobe of his right lung, making him susceptible to respiratory illnesses, especially during colder months. His age and increasing medical issues, including mobility challenges due to knee troubles and sciatica, have required the use of mobility aids such as a wheelchair or cane.Despite these health challenges, the Pope's schedule had intensified recently due to the commencement of the 2025 Jubilee—a significant year involving a series of religious events aimed at fostering faith, penance, and forgiveness. With millions expected to pilgrimage to the Vatican in the coming months, the Jubilee lineup for various demographics is set to unfold throughout the next ten months, highlighting the pontiff's dedication to his ministry even amidst health setbacks.
