The partner of US influencer Ashly Robinson, who died last week while on holiday with him on the Tanzanian islands of Zanzibar, has had his passport 'withheld', local police stated. Joe McCann, 45, is understood to be conversing with police as a witness, with no arrests made. Authorities previously indicated that McCann is not suspected of wrongdoing.
Zanzibar's police informed local media that Robinson, 31, attempted to take her own life. McCann has not made public comments regarding the incident. In a US interview, Robinson’s parents described her death as 'not making sense' and are actively seeking answers. The police confirmed that investigations are ongoing, including awaiting the official medical examination report.
Robinson was reportedly found unconscious in her villa and had been rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead hours later, her family disclosed on Sunday. Robinson’s parents conveyed their confusion and sadness, especially given that she had recently celebrated her birthday and gotten engaged during the trip. They had heard from McCann only hours after the incident with limited detail.
Zanzibar's police chief, Benedict Mapujira, noted that a misunderstanding between the couple prompted hotel management to separate them into different rooms prior to the incident. The case was reported late last Wednesday when hotel staff raised concerns about a guest suspected of being suicidal.
In a statement, the Zuri Zanzibar hotel expressed deep sadness over the incident, affirming its cooperation with authorities and the US embassy while maintaining privacy regarding the ongoing investigation. The US State Department has confirmed the death of an American in Zanzibar, emphasizing that the safety and security of Americans is of utmost priority. Robinson's parents are collaborating with authorities as investigations proceed, and her followers have been expressing their condolences on social media.
