Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a surprising offer to the United States, proposing access to rare minerals sourced from Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine. This announcement comes amidst mounting pressure from the Trump administration for Ukraine to engage in resource-sharing negotiations, with reports indicating discussions are nearing completion. In an interview broadcasted on state television, Putin revealed his readiness to collaborate with American firms on projects that include mineral extraction from these newly acquired territories. He cited the potential for cooperative ventures in mining and the aluminium sector, particularly highlighting the capabilities of Russia’s largest aluminium producer, Rusal, based in Krasnoyarsk.Putin positioned Russia as the superior party in this potential engagement, asserting that Russia possesses significantly greater mineral resources compared to Ukraine. He framed the proposal as an opportunity for the US, emphasizing that Russia is prepared to collaborate with international partners to develop these resources. The Kremlin's move to open discussions on mineral access marks a notable turnaround, reflecting both the geopolitical stakes at play and Putin's commitment to maintaining control over Russia’s natural wealth. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov conveyed optimism about the prospective partnership, underlining that the US's demand for rare earth minerals aligns with Russia's plentiful reserves.Ukraine, which is estimated to hold around 5% of the global critical raw materials, has been urged by Trump to finalize a deal that would provide the US access to these resources, purportedly valued at approximately $500 billion. However, Ukrainian officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishyna, maintain that negotiations are progressing positively and that significant elements of the agreement are complete.Alongside the US's push for mineral access, the European Union has also suggested a partnership with Ukraine, positing that such collaborations hold mutual benefits for both sides amidst an increasingly complex resource landscape shaped by ongoing conflict.
