In brief
The Kwek family, known for their immense wealth and influence in Singapore’s property market, faces a litigation battle that echoes themes from popular media dramas.
In a scenario reminiscent of Hollywood dramas, a tumultuous feud has erupted within one of Singapore's wealthiest families, the Kweks. The family patriarch, Kwek Leng Beng, who serves as the executive chairman of City Developments Limited (CDL), has leveled serious accusations against his son, Sherman Kwek, the company’s chief executive. The elder Kwek is asserting that Sherman, along with two other board members and several directors, is orchestrating a plot to seize control of the property giant. At 84 years old, Kwek Leng Beng is making headlines with a court filing that was submitted Wednesday, alleging the boardroom coup attempt, claiming it was necessary "to deal with this attempted coup at the board level and restore corporate integrity." This controversy emerges as CDL, recognized as Singapore's largest publicly traded property developer, has placed its shares under a trading halt pending developments in the situation. The company also announced its plans to appoint a new chief executive officer when the time is deemed appropriate, with potential interim leadership being assigned to Sherman’s cousin, Kwek Eik Sheng. The family feud intensified after an email from CDL's corporate secretary on January 28 suggested the appointment of two additional independent directors, just before the Lunar New Year holiday, further fueling tensions. As the litigation unfolds, the dispute has drawn massive public interest given that family business tussles often lead to complex legal implications in the region. In a statement following the court hearing, CDL confirmed that the newly-nominated directors would refrain from assuming any powers until further notice and stated that Sherman would retain his position for the time being.Sherman expressed disappointment over what he termed as extreme actions taken by his father concerning disagreements related to the board's composition and size. The Kwek family has a long-standing history in the property sector, having taken over operation of CDL in 1971 when it was facing financial difficulties. Under their stewardship, the firm has expanded its reach, managing over 160 hotels, residential, and commercial properties across the globe, all part of a vast family fortune. In parallels to the acclaimed HBO drama series "Succession," where corporate struggles for power resonated with audiences, the Kwek family's internal conflict highlights the often turbulent dynamics within family-run empires.
