In brief
The devastating conflict has led to catastrophic famine conditions, affecting millions of lives.
In a significant development, a convoy carrying essential food aid has reached Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, marking the first delivery since civil war broke out in April 2023. This shipment comes amid what the United Nations has described as "the world's worst hunger crisis," stemming from the ongoing warfare between Sudan's armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). As the trucks rolled into south Khartoum on Thursday, emotions ran high. Humanitarian worker Duaa Tariq, who represents the Sudanese humanitarian organization Emergency Response Rooms, recounted the overwhelming joy among the onlookers. "There were tears of laughter and joy," she told BBC, describing the moment as one filled with relief after a long wait for aid amidst continuing strife. The convoy, which comprised 28 trucks, facilitated the delivery of vital food and health supplies to local institutions, including Al Bashayer Hospital. UNICEF, which contributed five of the trucks, emphasized the importance of timely assistance in such a desperate situation. “We are in desperate need of this aid," Tariq stressed, indicating that effective assistance is crucial to mitigate the severe famine gripping Khartoum.Just days prior to the convoy's arrival, an independent panel of food security experts warned that Sudan is heading towards a "widening famine crisis." Current estimates suggest that approximately 24.6 million people, nearly half the population, are urgently in need of food assistance, as reported by the Integrated Food Phase Classification (IPC).The chaotic conditions stem from a power struggle following a coup in 2021, resulting in a protracted civil war that has claimed thousands of lives. US special envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello indicated earlier this year that estimates suggest around 150,000 fatalities due to the conflict. Additionally, over 11 million people have been displaced from their homes since the violence escalated. Despite numerous failed attempts to mediate peace between the army and the RSF, the delivery of this aid convoy offers a glimmer of hope in an increasingly dire humanitarian situation for the residents of Khartoum.
