In brief

As the U.S. government prepares for a shutdown, the Education Department is set to face operational disruptions after significant staffing reductions under former President Trump. Key areas affected include civil rights investigations and the issuance of new federal grants, even as student loan payments remain due and aid disbursals continue for now.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Education Department is bracing for a significant operational halt as a result of the impending government shutdown, following devastating budget cuts instituted during the Trump administration. Although federal financial aid programs will continue to function and student loan payments are still required, key sectors of the department's workload, particularly civil rights investigations and the application process for new federal grants, will come to a standstill.

According to a contingency plan released by the department, approximately 87% of its employees will be furloughed when the shutdown begins, which is set to leave vital civil rights investigations unattended and the issuance of new grants halted. However, loan payments and disbursements will continue uninterrupted, affecting close to 10 million students enrolled in federal aid programs.

Since taking office, former President Trump has actively pursued a strategy to diminish the Education Department, viewing its operations as influenced by an overly liberal agenda. In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court upheld significant layoffs that have since cut the department’s workforce down by half, placing heightened strain on remaining staff and resources.

In the event of prolonged funding inaction, the Education Department may be forced to revise its operational plans to mitigate any adverse effects on educational institutions across the nation. This is especially concerning for programs like Impact Aid, designed to support schools impacted by federal land management activities.

As the shutdown progresses, essential functions of the department, including the handling of civil rights complaints alleging discrimination based on race, gender, or disability, will be paused. The department has experienced a backlog in these investigations, and this interruption could exacerbate the situation, leaving many cases unresolved.

Overall, the upcoming shutdown represents a critical juncture for the U.S. Education Department's capabilities and highlights the ramifications of political actions on educational systems across the country.
