In brief

A diver, working to recover the sunken superyacht Bayesian, tragically lost his life in an accident off the coast of northern Sicily.

In a somber turn of events, a diver has died while involved in the recovery operation of tech mogul Mike Lynch's ill-fated superyacht, which sank last August near Porticello, Sicily, according to local police. The diver, identified as a 39-year-old Dutch national, was conducting underwater work when the accident occurred. The exact cause of death remains under investigation. The salvage effort has drawn international attention following the sinking of the Bayesian during an unexpected storm, which claimed the lives of seven individuals, including Lynch, 59, and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah. In addition to them, several prominent figures such as Morgan Stanley International's chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife also perished in this maritime disaster on August 19.This calamity unfolded as salvage vessels, dispatched earlier this month, arrived in the eventful waters. A total of 22 people were aboard the yacht during its last voyage, with 15persons escaping via lifeboat, including Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old child. Ongoing inquiries have raised questions about the yacht's ability to withstand severe weather, given its high-end construction. The recovery operation is being managed by British marine consultancy TMC Marine alongside expert teams from the Netherlands and local Italian specialists. Approximately 70 personnel from across Europe have been mobilized for this complex task. Preparations on-site are reportedly progressing smoothly, with significant advancements announced by the salvage teams. They are set to begin the lifting process of the Bayesian towards month-end, contingent on favorable weather conditions.Part of the recovery strategy involves initially stabilizing the vessel using steel slings. Once secure, crews will begin detaching the rigging and the 72-meter mast, an engineering marvel that stands tall among its contemporaries. Additionally, every precaution is being taken to prevent pollution, with monitoring of potential releases from the yacht's tanks. An inquest is currently underway in the UK concerning the passing of Lynch and his daughter, amidst broader investigations surrounding the sinking. Lynch, the founder of the software company Autonomy, was celebrating his judicial acquittal in a fraud case linked to the company's controversial sale to Hewlett-Packard. Tragically, this celebration turned into an unspeakable catastrophe.
