In brief
During his visit to India, US Vice-President JD Vance emphasized the need for stronger relations between India and the United States, focusing on trade negotiations and collaboration in various sectors. Vance’s remarks follow a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where both leaders expressed optimism about reaching a bilateral trade deal to address tariffs and enhance cooperation in defense and energy.
US Vice-President JD Vance, while on a four-day visit to India, has called for enhanced bilateral relations between India and the United States. Speaking at an event in Jaipur, Vance stressed that collaboration is essential not only for a "prosperous and peaceful" 21st Century but also to avoid the potential for a challenging global landscape if both nations fail to work together.Vance's remarks came following constructive discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where progress in trade negotiations was highlighted. India seeks to secure a bilateral trade agreement to bypass increased tariffs that would have reached 27% following President Donald Trump's 90-day pause on tariffs, which concludes on 9 July. The initial negotiations have led to the finalization of the terms of reference, a crucial step towards solidifying a trade deal that aligns with the shared vision of Trump and Modi.Commending Modi as a "tough negotiator," Vance acknowledged the ongoing complexities in the trade relationship, particularly regarding tariffs and sectors like agriculture, where India maintains strong protections. In addressing these issues, the US hopes to expand energy exports and enhance defense collaboration. As part of Vance's visit, he aims to deepen connections beyond economic discussions. Accompanied by his wife Usha and their three children, they are exploring Indian culture during their trip, highlighting Usha Vance's family roots in Andhra Pradesh. Following official meetings, the family has planned visits to the historic Amer Fort in Jaipur and the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra, reflecting a blend of diplomatic engagement and personal exploration. As both nations anticipate upcoming events such as the Quad summit later this year, the foundations for a strengthened partnership are being laid.
