In brief
The Grand Egyptian Museum is welcoming visitors with a partial opening after more than two decades of development. Situated near the iconic pyramids of Giza, the massive 120-acre space will eventually house over 100,000 pieces showcasing the grandeur of ancient Egypt, including artifacts from King Tutankhamun’s tomb. Despite these treasures not yet being on display, the galleries now feature a variety of exhibits ranging from pharaonic statues to intricately designed sarcophagi and mummified bodies.
The museum has faced numerous delays due to financial issues, political instability, and the Covid-19 pandemic. Initially slated for a 2012 debut, the project has cost over $1 billion to date. The recent opening acts as a trial run, building on last year's unveiling of its main hall and stairway, with the official full opening date yet to be decided.Visitors can currently experience the splendor of ancient craftsmanship, with stone coffins (sarcophagi) often adorned with gold and gems among the highlights. This preview sets an intriguing stage for when the museum is fully opened, promising an unparalleled journey into Egypt's rich history.
