In brief

Rosita Missoni, a pioneer of colorful Italian knitwear, tragically passed away, leaving behind a legacy marked by innovation and iconic design since 1953.

Rosita Missoni, the distinguished co-founder of the luxury knitwear brand Missoni, has died at the age of 93. The confirmation came from Attilio Fontana, the president of Lombardy, who commemorated her contributions to fashion and described her passing as a tremendous loss for Italy and her hometown of Varese. Born in 1931 in Golasecca, Lombardy, she launched theMissoni brand alongside her husband Ottavio in 1953, marking a pivotal moment in fashion history with their signature zig-zag motif. Her journey began with a formative trip to London, where fate intertwined her life with Ottavio, who was competing in the 400m hurdles at the 1948 Olympic Games. The couple's entrepreneurial spirit was solidified when they established a machine-knitwear workshop in Gallarate, just northwest of Milan, equipped with four sewing machines Rosita received as wedding gifts. The brand gained substantial acclaim in 1958 after a Milan department store commissioned hundreds of Missoni-designed striped dresses. The brand's first catwalk show followed in 1966, further solidifying Missoni's place in the fashion world. Notably, a controversy surrounding the transparency of materials used in their clothing only heightened global interest. While Ottavio passed away in 2013, Rosita continued to play an active role in the brand alongside their daughter Angela, who assumed control of the fashion label in the late 1990s, overseeing its expansion and innovation, particularly within the home line, Missoni Home.
