The family of Marwan Barghouti, the most prominent Palestinian prisoner, has announced that he has been subjected to physical violence in Israeli custody. Arab Barghouti expressed his shock and distress upon learning from his father's Israeli lawyer that Marwan had been assaulted three times in just one month by prison guards.

The Israeli Prison Service (IPS) refuted these allegations, labeling them as false. Marwan Barghouti, who is currently serving five life sentences plus 40 years for orchestrating attacks against Israeli civilians, has been imprisoned since 24 years ago during the second intifada. Opinion polls show he remains the most popular Palestinian leader, often compared to South Africa's Nelson Mandela for his unifying potential among Palestinians.

His son argued that Barghouti's elevated status has made him a target for abuse, representing hope for unity and democratic renewal within the Palestinian community. According to his lawyer, Ben Marmarelli, Barghouti was severely beaten during a transfer to another prison and was left bleeding while requesting medical care, which he claims was denied. The IPS, however, maintains that it is unaware of any incidents matching such descriptions.

The recent escalation of violence against Palestinian detainees has prompted concern from human rights groups and numerous UN agencies, particularly after increased calls for harsher conditions from some Israeli officials following the Hamas-led attacks in October 2023. Reports from rights organizations assert a systematic approach to abuse against Palestinians in Israeli jails, with calls from leaders demanding accountability and improved treatment for detainees.

Barghouti's family highlights the lack of international response to the conditions faced by their loved ones in prison, contributing to feelings of dehumanization among Palestinians in conflict zones.
