Police have issued an arrest warrant for the suspect in a mass shooting at Brown University that killed two people and injured nine others, sources close to the investigation told CBS News.
Authorities are now searching for the suspect and a car believed to have been rented by them. The suspect has not yet been publicly identified.
There is a potential link between the shooting at Brown and the recent murder of a professor at MIT, which occurred approximately two days later.
The investigation, now in its sixth day, includes door-to-door inquiries, requests for home-security footage, and appeals for public tips to help find the gunman.
A news conference that police in Providence, Rhode Island, had planned for Thursday afternoon was canceled without explanation, but updates are expected later in the day.
On Wednesday, authorities confirmed they are exploring connections between the Brown shooting and the killing of MIT nuclear science professor Nuno F Gomes Loureiro, who was shot multiple times at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, about 50 miles from Providence.
Detailing the investigation, police have obtained an arrest warrant for a suspect, with a rental vehicle that matches descriptions seen at both crime scenes.
Federal authorities had previously indicated there was no link between the two incidents.
The search has included releasing surveillance images of a person thought to have been nearby the potential suspect, with Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez stating they wish to speak with this individual for relevant insights into the investigation.
Chief Perez also noted, the killer could be anywhere, as they work to identify and locate the suspect, sharing that they remain uncertain of their whereabouts.
As public frustration grows regarding the slow progress in the investigation, Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha expressed confidence that the perpetrator would be apprehended, asserting, it is just a matter of time before we catch him. The FBI has offered a reward of $50,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the perpetrator.
The tragic shooting took place at the Barus & Holley engineering building during final exams, resulting in the death of two students: Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, a freshman from Uzbekistan.
