In a remarkable case that intertwines celebrity and crime, Matvei Rumiantsev, a 22-year-old man, has been convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm after his actions were reported by Barron Trump, the son of former US President Donald Trump. Rumiantsev's conviction was held at Snaresbrook Crown Court, where evidence revealed that Trump contacted UK authorities after witnessing an attack on a woman during a video call.
The incident took place in January 2025, when Trump, then 19, was in the US and claimed that he saw a woman being assaulted by Rumiantsev. Prosecutors highlighted Rumiantsev's jealousy regarding the woman's friendship with Trump, which was a motive for the attack. In addition to his assault conviction, Rumiantsev was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice but was acquitted of more severe charges, including rape.
The assault occurred in the early morning hours of January 18, after Rumiantsev and the victim had been drinking together. Jurors learned about the details of Trump's call to the police, revealing his concern for the woman’s safety. The prosecution presented testimony that Rumiantsev struck the victim in the face during the assault.
During the trial, Judge Mr Justice Bennathan KC cautioned the jury not to rely solely on Trump's report for their conviction decision. The judge noted that Trump had not offered formal testimony under oath. Rumiantsev's defense claimed that he felt wronged by the victim's actions toward Trump, further complicating the emotional context of the case.
Ultimately, Rumiantsev was sentenced for his actions judged against criteria of jealousy and violence, along with his attempts to undermine the judicial process through communication with the victim from prison. This case sheds light on the influence that digital interactions can have in legal scenarios, particularly when notable figures become involved.
