In brief
In an exclusive interview, Angolan President João Lourenço highlighted the importance of U.S. investments and a forthcoming historic visit by President Biden, emphasizing ongoing partnerships despite potential changes in U.S. leadership.
Since taking office, João Lourenço has aimed to reposition Angola away from its Cold War alliances, forging a significant partnership with the United States. The anticipated visit from President Biden marks a historic moment as he becomes the first sitting U.S. president to make the trip to Angola, a nation rich in oil along the Atlantic coast. This visit aligns with Biden’s broader initiative to increase U.S. investment in Africa, specifically focusing on the Lobito Corridor, an extensive railway project projected to enhance the transportation of minerals essential for clean energy. Lourenço's administration is keenly aware of the competition posed by Chinese investments in the region, and the upcoming meeting with Biden is meant to demonstrate the U.S.'s commitment to not only Angolan development but to counteract foreign influence. In a recent discussion at the presidential palace in Luanda, Lourenço expressed his aspirations for increased U.S. interaction. He stated, "We want to have U.S. investment coming to Angola and also having the U.S. market as a destination for Angolan investments. For such, of course, we need to take this step." The president also expressed a readiness to engage with President-elect Donald Trump, citing a desire to maintain robust ties irrespective of which administration takes office. This strategic diplomacy emphasizes Angola's commitment to strengthening its global partnerships, showcasing its readiness for a future that incorporates its newfound closeness with the United States while remaining open to various political contexts ahead.
