LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Amidst extreme cold temperatures over the weekend, a Kentucky family demonstrated extraordinary compassion by opening their home to a newborn calf struggling in the intense freeze.

Shortly after being brought indoors, the calf, after being fed and fluffed, made herself comfortable on the couch alongside the Sorrell family’s two young children. Macey Sorrell shared this heartwarming moment on social media, where it captured the hearts of many.

The calf was born outdoors in temperatures below freezing. Macey noted that upon discovering the calf, it was evident she was suffering; her umbilical cord was frozen. “It was just frozen,” recalled Macey, who lives in Mount Sterling, Kentucky. Concerned after losing a calf to frostbite last winter, the family swiftly brought the newborn inside to nurse her back to health.

“When we brought her in, she had ice on her. The afterbirth was still on her, and I had to wipe all that off,” Macey explained. Using a blow dryer to warm her up, they cared for the calf until she was ready to snuggle in with the family.

As she relaxed on the couch, Gregory, the Sorrells’ 3-year-old son, decided to name her Sally after a character from his favorite film, “Cars.” The calf blended into the family dynamic seamlessly, with the children treating her as a beloved pet.

This close-knit family, accustomed to caring for animals — they keep about thirty-six cows on their farm — assured that Sally was reunited with her mom the next day and is now thriving. Macey initially hesitated to share the photos on social media, stating the act of bringing animals inside was not unusual for them. However, the overwhelming responses highlighted the enjoyment many found in the photos, celebrating the sweet moments between the family and their new friend.

“It’s just part of what you do,” Macey concluded, speaking on the importance of caring for their animals.
