In brief

During a meeting in Sofia, President Iliana Iotova praised Saudi Arabia as a prime partner, citing security cooperation and potential for joint innovation projects. She highlighted the importance of stabilizing the Strait of Hormuz and discussed opportunities in AI, high technology, and a direct flight link between the two capitals. The president also welcomed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's support and extended an invitation for a visit.

At a summit in Sofia on Wednesday, President Iliana Iotova met Saudi Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Nayef Al Saud, announcing Saudi Arabia as Bulgaria’s most promising partner in the Middle East, according to BTA. The meeting also included Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev and was conducted under the auspices of strengthening bilateral relations in security and expanding into broader economic areas.

President Iotova emphasized that advances in security cooperation would provide a foundation for broader partnership, citing the conflict in the Persian Gulf and the disruptions to freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz as a risk to global supply chains. She underlined the Kingdom’s role as a stabilizing factor that can help de‑escalate tensions in the region, thereby safeguarding international trade routes.

In addition to security, the president stressed the potential for expanding ties in innovation. Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, a wide‑scale modernization initiative, offers avenues for Bulgarian firms specializing in artificial intelligence and high technology to participate in large‑scale projects. BTA noted that Bulgaria’s expertise could align with the Kingdom’s goals to diversify its economic base and advance digital transformation.

Strategic Opportunities in Innovation and Technology

The president highlighted Bulgaria’s interest in Saudi Arabia’s Future Investment Initiative, a forum created by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman to facilitate public‑private cooperation. Participation in this high‑profile event could open doors for Bulgarian companies to engage with Saudi investors and technology platforms, fostering an exchange that benefits both economies.

Concrete steps toward deeper cooperation include establishing a direct air link between Sofia and Riyadh. The proposal would create new pathways for business, tourism, and cultural exchange, potentially boosting bilateral trade and people‑to‑people contact. The president also mentioned that such connectivity could serve as a catalyst for joint ventures and research collaborations in emerging technologies.

The Saudi Interior Minister conveyed Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s congratulations on President Iotova’s election, expressing optimism about deepening bilateral relations and stressing Bulgaria’s reliability as a partner. The president reciprocated by renewing her invitation to the Crown Prince to visit Bulgaria and underscored the importance of sustained dialogue to enhance stability and prosperity in the region.

Separately, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry noted that both countries were stepping up cooperation in security and internal affairs, reaffirming the strategic significance of their alliance. The meeting concluded with an agreement to pursue joint initiatives that address regional security challenges while simultaneously promoting technological innovation and economic diversification.
