In brief

As President Putin prepares for talks with Donald Trump, both France and the UK have implored him to show genuine interest in reaching a peace agreement regarding Ukraine. Calls for an immediate ceasefire coincide with discussions surrounding critical issues such as control of significant territories and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, escalating international pressure on Moscow.

French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy have urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to demonstrate a genuine commitment to peace in Ukraine ahead of anticipated discussions with Donald Trump. Macron praised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's bravery in considering a ceasefire, urging Putin to mirror this bravery and insistently stating, “Enough deaths. Enough lives destroyed. Enough destruction. The guns must fall silent."Lammy also echoed the ceasefire call during a parliamentary session, emphasizing the lack of apparent interest from Putin in negotiating peace. He warned that the UK and its allies possess further strategies to pressure Russia into meaningful negotiations, highlighting the critical need for action prior to the Trump-Putin engagement. The White House has expressed a more optimistic perspective as the talks approach, asserting that peace in Ukraine could be "closer than ever."White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt noted Trump’s determination to negotiate a peace agreement, citing discussions surrounding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, currently under Russian control since March 2022. Concerns have emerged regarding the safety of the facility amid ongoing military activities in the region. Trump acknowledged that territory and asset divisions would be significant discussion points during his upcoming conversation with Putin.Though Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remained noncommittal about the details of the talks, Putin has previously mentioned his support for a ceasefire, albeit with conditions. Tensions escalate over the Western Kursk region, where Ukraine had previously made incursions. Putin claims to have regained full control in this area and has expressed skepticism over how a ceasefire could be verified without NATO troops present.Last week, Ukrainian and American delegates discussed a peace proposal in Saudi Arabia, proposing a 30-day ceasefire which Ukraine is reportedly prepared to accept. Moreover, President Macron and newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have reiterated their nations’ steadfast support for Ukraine, emphasizing the necessity for clear commitments from Russia moving forward.
