Eritrean Troops Advance Deep into Ethiopia's Tigray Region Amid Renewed Skirmishes

Eritrean soldiers have crossed into northern Ethiopia, heading towards a zone where clashes are ongoing between the Ethiopian National Defense Forces and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). Residents in Adigrat report that a convoy of roughly 40 trucks, many with Eritrean registration plates, are moving southward into the Tigray region.

Background

The conflict in Tigray erupted after months of tension over a 2022 peace deal that both sides allege was violated. Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of supporting the TPLF, a claim that Asmara denies. The war, which lasted from 2020 to 2022, brought the region to the brink of famine.

Current Situation

Following the TPLF’s retreat from Mekelle, the Ethiopian government has regained control of the capital. However, reports from Wukro and Adigrat describe the entry of both government troops and allied fighters, with heavy weaponry including anti‑aircraft guns being moved through the area.

The renewed fighting has led Ethiopia and Eritrea to sever diplomatic ties, heightening fears of a broader regional conflict. Mobile network and internet services have been restored to most towns, but the BBC cannot report from inside Tigray.

Reactions and Concerns

Local residents describe the return of Eritrean troops as emotionally distressing, recalling atrocities committed during the civil war. Ethiopian military officials have warned that Eritrea’s involvement will be met with retaliation.

International observers continue to monitor the situation, with humanitarian concerns mounting as civilians face renewed insecurity.
