Narges Mohammadi, Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner, was taken to a hospital following a brutal arrest that left her injured, according to her family. The human rights activist reported severe physical attacks by plainclothes agents during a memorial event.
Mohammadi, 53, revealed in a phone call that she was hospitalized twice after sustaining significant head and neck injuries from baton blows. It is reported that around 15 agents assaulted her, as she spoke during a memorial in Mashhad for another activist, Khosrow Alikordi.
Although Iranian officials have yet to comment, they indicated that her detention was due to her allegedly provocative statements during the event. Activists, along with the Nobel Committee, are calling for her swift release, expressing deep concern over her treatment.
Mohammadi, who has championed human rights and women’s rights in Iran, has faced numerous legal battles and has previously been sentenced to 13 years in prison on various charges, which she has denied.
The recent violence against her has provoked outcry from both local and international communities, with other activists also reporting similar experiences during the memorial event.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has condemned the brutal nature of her arrest and urged Iranian authorities to prioritize her safety and well-being, requesting her unconditional release.
